Series Snapshot ~ 5/14/2026

Welcome to the Series Snapshot, a weekly deep dive into the shows topping the streaming charts.

Netflix’s Man on Fire takes a victory lap this week, just ahead of Legends and Worst Ex Ever. The platform released all seven episodes in a binge-drop on April 30th, and viewership has remained high without weekly installments. Inspired by the A.J. Quinnell Novel, Man on Fire has gripped viewers with its brutal action sequences, and visually stunning setpieces filmed partially in Rio de Janeiro. Audiences and critics continue to praise the cast of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Billie Boullet, and Bobby Cannavale, as Man on Fire’s best asset, and each brings new life to the characters entirely independent of the 2004 film. For some, the series suffers from occasional bland segments and filler, which are not always successful in stretching the plot across seven episodes. Because of this, Man on Fire also incorporates a few story elements from Quinnell’s sequel, The Perfect Kill. The show’s high engagement and cliffhanger ending may have earned it a greenlight for season two, but Abdul Mateen II is also booked as the lead in Disney’s Wonder Man, which will conflict with production schedules, so Man on Fire is also up in the air, for the moment. Man on Fire was created by Kyle Killen

At Hulu, Handmaid’s Tale spinoff The Testaments takes the number one spot, after The Rookie viewership drops off following their successful season finale. The season is nearing its end with just two episodes remaining, and the finale scheduled for May 27th. The Testaments changes up the original Handmaid formula with a shift from dystopian horror to spy thriller, and the faster pacing reflects this. Thanks to the success of the original series, Testaments wastes little time on exposition and world building, allowing the plot to drive forward, and focus on relationships. Ann Dowd, reprising her role as Aunt Lydia, shines in her performance and is often shouted-out, but Chase Infiniti and Lucy Halliday are equally captivating as the disillusioned Gilead teenagers Agnes and Daisy. While the spinoff loses some of the edge and impact of the original, its focus on sisterhood and resistance show glimmers of hope. No official word yet from Hulu as to whether Testaments will return for a second season, but creator Bruce Miller has confirmed that writing is already underway.

Despite polarized reception, Euphoria continues to dominate the charts at HBO Max, ahead of Rooster. Season three is the lowest-rated by far, but audiences have been tuning in regardless. This was likely to happen no matter how Euphoria’s newest season performed, due to several factors; the massive star-power from its core cast, the cultural event of the show concluding, and a can’t-look-away trainwreck appeal that has viewers watching out of morbid curiosity. Core criticism stems from the feeling that Euphoria lost its identity and original concept, and the main characters are the only consistent throughline. The performances of Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and Hunter Schafer are all universally praised, but fans bemoan the loss of the original tone and genre. Euphoria has just three episodes left, and will air a special ninety-three minute finale on May 31st. Euphoria was created by Sam Levinson

The Boys continues its streak at Amazon, now for its fifth week straight. The series’ massive reach and continued high ratings will see it go down as one of Amazon’s biggest and most definitive yet. While other originals like Fallout and Rings of Power may have had larger singular moments, The Boys consistently performs above and beyond, and has maintained and grown its viewer base over the years. Debuting the same year as Avengers: EndgameThe Boys began to pick up momentum during the superhero fatigue that audiences started to feel, and offered a sardonic twist on the genre plus some much needed self-awareness. It also geared itself toward mature audiences by not shying away from gratuitous violence or political commentary. Antony Starrin a justice league of his own, shines as Homelander, and the well-cast Karl UrbanJack QuaidErin Moriarty and Laz Alonso receive no shortage of praise. It all ends with the series finale May 20th, and some limited-event theatrical screenings on the 19th. The IP will continue with prequel series Vought Rising, confirmed for 2027 and other developing projects. The Boys was created by Eric Kripke

Your Friends & Neighbors steals another week at the top, as Margo’s Got Money Troubles closes in at number two. The dark comedy crime-thriller scored highly with its first season, but as season two continues, ratings are more divisive. This seems to be driven in part to the new season shifting away from the neighbor heists into the fallout of Coop’s lies, but sometimes stumbles with soap opera-like tropes. There are also a few subplots that audiences find unsatisfying, and where Jon Hamms Coop was originally a confident, cunning anti-hero, he’s now written to be more passive, and loses command of his environment. Viewers who tuned in for escapism and satire are now met with heavier topics and slower pacing. Most agree with the decision to bring James Marsden to the show, who perfectly suits the world and plays season two’s big bad, Owen Ashe. Apple confirmed a third season, so there’s still time for Your Friends & Neighbors to fine-tune its voice. Your Friends & Neighbors also stars Amanda Peet, and Olivia Munn, and was created by Jonathan Tropper.

Popular Star Wars spinoff Maul: Shadow Lord tops the streaming chart for Disney Plus, now for the fourth week in a row. The series aired its finale just over a week ago on “Star Wars Day”, May 4th. The series is lauded by fans and critics for its uniquely mature and graphic take on the franchise, creating dark sci-fi noir moods through art design, writing, and stellar vocal performances. Visually rich animation brings the series’ action sequences to life, with dazzling fight choreography and striking environments. Sam Witwer, who has voiced Maul since Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2011, receives praise for bringing nuance and restraint to the character. Sam’s Maul together with Gideon Adlon’s portrayal of the young Devon are the emotional backbone of the series, and their scenes benefit from sharing a booth during recording. Maul: Shadow Lord has proven that fans are not put off by the animation’s explosive violence, or morbid aesthetic, and a second season is officially in production. Maul: Shadow Lord was created by Dave Filoni
