Series Snapshot ~ 8/20/2026
Welcome to the Series Snapshot, a weekly deep dive into the shows topping the streaming charts.
This week Netflix’s true crime docuseries The Idaho Murders stepped aside for My Life With the Walter Boys, which launched its third season on August 6th. Often compared to The Summer I Turned Pretty, Walter Boys is a coming-of-age romance adapted from Ali Novak’s 2014 novel of the same name. The series follows Manhattan teenager Jackie Howard (Nikki Rodriguez) as she relocates to Colorado following a family tragedy. Her late mother’s friend, Katherine (Sarah Rafferty) takes her in under the chaotic roof of the Walter family, and Jackie quickly takes interest in two of the Walter boys. The series hinges on Jackie’s internal battle between choosing the stable Alex (Ashby Gentry), while resisting the bad boy, Cole (Noah LaLonde). Season two left viewers with a major cliffhanger, but was immediately resolved in season three, which released all eight of its episodes in binge drop format. The series as a whole gets somewhat tepid critical reception, but is a commercial success for Netflix, and the streaming giant greenlit a fourth season ahead of season three’s release. My Life With the Walter Boys also stars Mark Blucas and Chad Rook, and was developed for television by Melanie Halsall.
Hulu’s crime thriller Furious reclaims the top spot after taking runner-up to The Shards last week. Both series stand to be competitive, with similar target demographics and identical weekly release formats, though Furious generally scores much higher with critics. Audiences have been drawn in by recent episodes, which see protagonist Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) rebel against her boss, Marshall (Jake Lacy). Furious has received consistent praise for its portrayal of female rage, and poignant commentary on the failures of modern society and systems meant to protect. This steady-handed approach has elevated the series beyond a run-of-the-mill detective procedural, and viewers are completely hooked, calling it one of Hulu’s most exciting new shows in years. It’s true that many prefer a series that doesn’t force you to think, but Furious’ deeper examination of psychology and morality have given its audience something to chew on. Furious has not yet been greenlit for more seasons, but its continuation is all but guaranteed. Furious also stars Lola Petticrew, Steve Way, and Scoot McNairy, and was developed and executive produced by Elizabeth Meriwether.
For HBO, political fantasy series House of the Dragon takes a victory lap after concluding its third season last week, marking a perfect run at the top every single week since its premiere. Audiences are continuing to stream the series, following a common pattern where many choose to wait for every episode to come out before diving in. It’s anyone’s game who will take the top spot next, and it’s looking like new DC series Lanterns may swoop in after scoring highly this week. House of the Dragon’s third season was largely so successful thanks to the explosive first episode and driving momentum throughout. While earlier seasons experienced some pacing issues, season three was kept tight and plot-heavy, with no shortage of budget-flexing battles. Its cast has also been hailed by some as the strongest in all of Game of Thrones, and has earned many new fan favorite characters. Those fans will have a long wait until season four in 2028, but will get to enjoy more adventures with Sir Duncan the Tall in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2027. House of the Dragon stars Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Steve Toussaint, Olivia Cooke, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Ewan Mitchell, and was created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal.
Amazon Prime original series Reacher returned with its fourth season on August 12, and quickly climbed the charts with the most views this week. Reacher is about an off-the-grid former military police investigator, who drifts from town to town but always finds himself swept up in high-stakes criminal conspiracies. The season released its first three episodes (a strategy also deployed by The Shards and Furious), and will continue with weekly releases every Wednesday. The show is based on the bestselling novels by author Lee Child, and stars Alan Ritchson as the titular Jack Reacher. The role had previously been played by Tom Cruise for a couple of films in 2012 and 2016, but fans of the books have embraced the Amazon series for its more accurate reflection of the source material, primarily in the casting of Ritchson, who physically embodies the character’s massive size. Reacher avoids the “himbo” trope by being written as intelligent and resourceful, as often outsmarting his enemies as beating them up. Reacher has received consistently high praise from critics and viewers (mostly men aged 30-65) for its excellent fight and action sequences, and tough guy with a heart-of-gold leading man. Each season adapts one novel, and since there are many, Amazon will likely keep renewing the series. Reacher also stars Maria Sten, and was developed by Nick Santora.
In a surprise, AppleTV’s feel good soccer series Ted Lasso slips this week, as Silo takes back the top spot. Audiences have been drawn back to Silo as it nears the end of its season, and with just two episodes remaining, the sci-fi has upped both the tension and stakes. Season three introduced a “prequel timeline” that features Ashley Zukerman and Jessica Henwick, and flashes back to the events that led humanity to retreat underground into the silos. With recent major revelations, both timelines are careening towards an exciting collision and a race against time as our protagonist, Juliette regains her memory. The season finale is set to air on September 4, and Silo has been renewed for a final, fourth season slated for the summer of 2027. Silo’s criticism has steadily improved from where it began, going from good to great in the eyes of most critics and viewers. Rebecca Ferguson has also delivered a tour-de-force performance this season and emotionally anchors the series as Juliette Nichols. Silo also stars Common, Tim Robbins, Harriet Walter, Avi Nash, Chinaza Uche, and was created by Graham Yost.
Adjusted for Hulu content, for which Furious and The Shards also take first and second at Disney, X-Men ‘97 is the most watched series of the week, after airing its explosive finale on August 12th. The series serves as a direct continuation from 1992’s X-Men: The Animated Series. Disney has been investing in X-Men more as more news about live action casting continues to trickle through social media, but the recent animated series has stood on its own merits; classic 2D animation keeps the spirit of the original alive, but with some modern upgrades like digital cinematic lighting and high-quality fight sequences, and its mature takes on socio-political topics appeal to adults who grew up with the original, but crave more narrative depth. Additionally, returning voice icons like Cal Dodd and Lenore Zann reprise their roles as Wolverine and Rogue, and newcomers Ray Chase and Jennifer Hale add fresh takes on Cyclops and Jean Grey. X-Men ‘97 is a critical success, with seasons three and four confirmed for 2027 and 2028. New head writer Matthew Chauncey will now helm the series- a move that most are enthused about, but die-hard fans protective of the IP may take time to win over. X-Men 97 was created by Beau DeMayo.
