Box Office Round-Up ~ 3/19/25

March doesn’t seem to be going out like a lion at the box office, with yet another soft weekend in the books. New release Novocaine took the top spot with $8.8 million, followed by fellow new release Black Bag in second place with $7.6 million. Decent numbers for a pair of mid-budget movies, though neither quite reached their predicted grosses.

Mickey 17 dropped to third place in its second weekend with $7.4 million, passing $33 million overall in the U.S. Making back its $118 million budget may be a tall order at this point. Captain America: Brave New World took fourth place, wrapping up a month in theaters with $5.6 million, putting it at $185 million total domestically.

Rounding out the top five was another new release, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, which grossed $3.1 million. The animated Daffy Duck/Porky Pig comedy suffered from minimal marketing, but its relatively low $15 million budget improves its odds of turning a profit. The Looney Tunes have had a tough run when it comes to features recently, with Space Jam: A New Legacy going directly to streaming mid-pandemic and the completed Coyote vs. Acme has been infamously scrapped by Warner Bros. before it even saw the light of day.

This coming weekend sees the biggest release of the spring so far, Disney’s live-action Snow White. Expectations have been tempered somewhat due to middling critical response (not to mention protracted online controversy), but if anyone is going to make for a big hit this month, it’ll be a Disney princess.
