Box Office Round-Up ~ 2/19/25

The Valentine’s/Presidents Day weekend worked in the box office’s favor, as both major new releases outperformed expectations. Captain America: Brave New World won the weekend with $89.8 million, clearing $100 million over its first four days. Obviously the MCU isn’t making Avengers: Endgame numbers at the moment, but it’s a better-than-expected opening weekend and encouraging news perhaps for Thunderbolts* in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.

Paddington in Peru took second place with $12.7 million, beating Paddington 2’s opening by over a million dollars. Heart Eyes and Dog Man remained in the top five, grossing a respective $9.8 million in third place and $9.7 million in fourth place.

Notable in fifth place was Chinese animated sequel Ne Zha 2, which made its U.S. debut with $7.3 million, almost four times better than its predecessor in 2019. That said, the film’s American numbers are a mere drop in the bucket for the smash hit, which has already grossed over $1.5 billion in China alone.

Captain America and Paddington alike will try to retain control of the box office for the rest of February, with their toughest competition coming from horror flick The Monkey on 2/21 and rescue drama Last Breath on 2/28.
