Box Office Round-Up ~ 12/4/24

It was the audience saying “you’re welcome” to Maui this past weekend, as Moana 2 shattered the five-day Thanksgiving weekend record with a $225 million opening, including $139.7 million from Friday-Sunday. Thanks to this, Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine, Disney on a pace for three of the top five highest grossing films of 2024.

Wicked continued its strong run in its second weekend, grossing $81.1 million Friday-Sunday to clear $260 million overall domestically. Similarly, Gladiator II held firm in third place with $31 million to easily pass the $100 million mark.

A pair of Christmas-themed features rounded out the top five, with Red One taking fourth place with $12.7 million. It has yet to reach $100 million overall in the U.S., which may prove to be a tough ask considering the new competition. In fifth place, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever returned to the top five in its fourth weekend, grossing $3.2 million to pass $30 million total. Expect a similar lineup next week, in the top three at least, with no major new releases on the horizon until 12/20, when Disney goes for its fourth box office success of the year with Mufasa: The Lion King.
