Box Office Round-Up ~ 11/20/24

The penultimate weekend before Thanksgiving saw a rare original action movie win the weekend (though one could argue that Dwayne Johnson is sort of an IP unto himself), as Red One debuted with a decent $32.1 million. It’s a similar opening weekend to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Johnson’s first collaboration with director Jake Kasdan back in 2017. That said, Red One is hitting theaters in a very different box office environment, but clearing $100 million overall isn’t out of the question.

Venom: The Last Dance moved to second place in its fourth weekend, grossing $7.3 million to clear $127 million overall domestically. In third and fourth place, last week’s new releases had solid sophomore weekend numbers, as The Best Christmas Pageant Ever grossed $5.2 million, with A24 horror flick Heretic close behind with $5.1 million. Both have hit $20 million overall.

In fifth place, The Wild Robot once again stayed in the mix after two months in theaters, benefiting from a lack of family-friendly competition to gross $4.2 million. November looks to close out strong (fingers crossed), with Gladiator 2 and Wicked hitting theaters Friday, followed by Moana 2 (speaking of Dwayne Johnson) on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
