Box Office Round-Up ~ 10/16/24

When it comes to killer clowns, apparently Art the Clown has a certain “it” factor that the Joker doesn’t. (That wasn’t meant to be a Pennywise pun, by the way.) Writer/director Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 debuted atop the box office this past weekend with a surprisingly solid $18.9 million, instantly becoming the most successful installment in the gore-filled cult horror series.

Meanwhile, Joker: Folie à Deux plummeted to fourth place, dropping over 80% to gross just $7 million in its sophomore weekend. It’s a massive disappointment for DC and Warner Bros., especially considering their run of underwhelming releases in recent years. Their eyes likely look now towards 2025 and James Gunn’s rebooted Superman.

The Wild Robot stayed in second place after three weekends, grossing $14 million and closing in on $100 million overall. In third place, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice cleared $275 million overall in the U.S., taking in $7.3 million in its sixth weekend in theaters. And rounding out the top five was Piece by Piece, documenting the life and career of Pharrell Williams via LEGO animation, which debuted with $3.8 million.
