Box Office Round-Up ~ 10/2/24
A robot was able to unseat Beetlejuice Beetlejuice after all, just not one from Cybertron. DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot was a surprise hit at the box office this past weekend, grossing $35.7 million thanks in part to glowing reviews and word-of-mouth. Between this and Kung Fu Panda 4 back in March, 2024 has been the best year for DreamWorks Animation since before the pandemic.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took second place, crossing the $250 million mark in less than a month with $16.2 million. Transformers One continued to disappoint with $9.1 million in third place. Breaking $100 million domestically may be a tall order at this point.
Bollywood actioner Devara Part 1 saw a better-than-expected U.S. debut with $5.6 million. Rounding out the top five, Speak No Evil grossed $4.2 million in its third weekend. This coming weekend’s new releases include the improbable musical sequel Joker: Folie á Deux, with Lady Gaga joining a returning Joaquin Phoenix. Advance reviews have been divisive to say the least, but that’s probably how the Joker would like it.
