Box Office Round-Up ~ 8/28/24

As the summer movie season draws to a better-than-expected close, Marvel’s favorite Canadians (sorry Alpha Flight) retook the top of the box office with $18.3 million in their fifth weekend. Deadpool & Wolverine has grossed $578 million overall domestically so far, locking it in for now as the second highest grossing movie of the year, well ahead of the rest of the top ten.

Alien: Romulus moved to second place in its second weekend with $16.3 million. It’s on the cusp of $75 million overall, with a good chance to hold strong through the end of August before any major competition arrives in September (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice on 9/6, for example). In third place, It Ends With Us continued its successful theatrical run, grossing $11.6 million in its third weekend for an overall domestic total of $120 million so far.

Two new releases rounded out the top five. Thriller Blink Twice, directed and co-written by Zoë Kravitz, debuted in fourth place with a solid $7.3 million. And in fifth place, faith-based drama The Forge opened with $6.6 million.

Also of note, well outside the top five, was The Crow. Like Borderlands before it, the long-gestating remake emerged from development hell to a disappointing $4.6 million debut. It’s obviously not the outcome Lionsgate was hoping for, but considering it was beaten by the re-release of Coraline perhaps it would have been wiser (and cheaper) to simply put the cult classic original in theaters instead.
