Box Office Round-Up ~ 8/21/24
It took a month and another beloved franchise to do the job, but Deadpool & Wolverine finally yielded the top spot at the box office, as Alien: Romulus debuted with an opening weekend of $42 million. It’s the second best opening weekend ever for the long-running sci-fi/horror series (behind 2012’s Prometheus), and yet another solid release for Disney in what has become a $1.5 billion year at the box office. (The Xenomorph, lest we not forget, is also part of the massive Disney IP family).
Deadpool & Wolverine closed in on $550 million overall in the U.S., grossing $30 million in its fourth weekend. In third place, It Ends With Us neared $100 million total, taking in $23.8 million for its sophomore weekend. In fourth place, Twisters grossed another $10 million in its fifth weekend in theaters, settling in as the fifth highest grossing movie of the year.
Fifth place saw a surprising success for Fathom Events, as their 15th anniversary re-release of Henry Selick’s animated classic Coraline grossed $9.6 million. As it happens, the film may cross the $100 million marker domestically over the coming week. Better late than never!
