Box Office Round-Up ~ 8/7/24

Despite multiple new releases in theaters, Deadpool & Wolverine held strong atop the box office for the second weekend in a row. With a weekend gross of $96 million, it’s now on the cusp of $400 million overall in the U.S., putting in the upper tier of the MCU, not to mention the highest grossing X-Men movie of all time. Similarly, Twisters is on the doorstep of $200 million overall, taking second place in its third weekend with $22.8 million.

Trap, the latest thriller from writer/director M. Night Shyamalan, had a relatively soft opening though not necessarily a severely disappointing one. It’s $15.4 million debut is similar to Shyamalan’s recent titles, such as Knock at the Cabin and Old.

The weekend’s other new release Harold and the Purple Crayon, a live-action adaptation/sequel of sorts to beloved children’s book, failed to crack the top five. This is no doubt thanks to the strong legs of Despicable Me 4 ($11.4 million) and Inside Out 2 ($6.8 million). This coming weekend could be Deadpool & Wolverine’s to lose as well, with the biggest competition coming from Lady Deadpool herself in the form of Blake Lively romantic drama It Ends With Us.
