Box Office Round-Up ~ 7/31/24
Reports of superhero movies’ demise may have been greatly exaggerated, as Deadpool & Wolverine landed in theaters with a massive $211 million debut. It’s the biggest opening weekend of the year, the best opening weekend for Deadpool and the entire X-Men franchise, the fourth best opening for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the sixth best opening weekend of all time. It may be held back slightly in the longterm by its R-rating and the meta, inside baseball (or inside Marvel) nature of its story, but it’s a welcome success for Disney and the Marvel Universe.
Other films took a hit at the hands of Logan and Wade, but that didn’t stop Twisters from passing the $150 million mark with a sophomore weekend gross of $34.9 million. Despicable Me 4 nears $300 million domestically at the end of its first month in theaters, grossing $14.5 million this past weekend.
Inside Out 2 solidified its hold as the highest grossing film of the year with an additional $8.6 million. It should be noted that Despicable Me 4 passed Dune: Part Two as the second-highest grossing movie of 2024, but Inside Out 2 has already made more than double the totals of either. Finally, Longlegs took fifth place with $6.7 million. With a domestic total of $58 million, it is now distributor Neon’s most successful release, surpassing Parasite by over $5 million.
