Box Office Round-Up ~ 7/23/24

Despite being the second-highest grossing movie of 1996, it took almost three decades for Twister to get a sequel (also back in the mid 90s, being a box office smash didn’t instantly mean sequels). Said sequel, the aptly named Twisters debuted this past weekend with a blockbuster-worthy $81.2 million. It outpaced its predicted numbers by a wide margin, buoyed perhaps by 90s nostalgia and Glen Powell’s emerging stardom. It should see an overall great domestic run, even if it has to contend with Deadpool & Wolverine next weekend.

Returning titles filled out the rest of the top five, as Despicable Me 2 entered its third week in theaters with $24.4 million, passing $260 million overall. Similarly, Inside Out 2 continued its wildly successful theatrical run with a sixth-weekend total of $12.8 million, putting it just shy of $600 million total in the U.S.

Longlegs took fourth place with a sophomore weekend total of $11.9 million, while A Quiet Place: Day One finished up its first month on the big screen with $6.3 million, for $127 million overall.

This coming weekend sees the return of Hugh Jackman to the role that made him a star, with Disney/Marvel’s aforementioned Deadpool & Wolverine. While technically an MCU release, it’s the first appearance of the former Fox characters since Disney absorbed the X-movies. It’ll also represent the first R-rated installment in the MCU. With all that in mind, Disney is sure to be watching the box office numbers closely as it plots the future of its Marvel heroes (new and old).
