Box Office Round-Up ~ 6/18/24

The whooshing sound you’re hearing is a massive sigh of relief from studios and theater chains, as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 premiered with the best opening weekend of 2024, surging past the $100 million mark to gross $154 million. It’s a higher opening weekend than last year’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which puts Inside Out 2 on a pace to be the highest grossing movie of the year in a matter of weeks.

It was an across-the-board big weekend at the box office, the first time since Barbenheimer that movies grossed a combined $200 million plus. In second place, Bad Boys: Ride or Die grossed $33.7 million, clearing $113 million overall in just two weekends. And as a welcome bonus for Disney, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes moved back up to third place with $5.5 million in its sixth weekend.

While the adult-oriented action movies over-performed this weekend, the family-friendly fare took a hit thanks to Inside Out 2’s success. The Garfield Movie grossed $4.7 million, while IF rounded out the top five with $3.6 million, though it did pass the $100 million mark overall. This coming weekend sees the release of The Bikeriders, which looks to be more counter-programming than competition for the dominant Inside Out 2.
