Box Office Round-Up ~ 6/11/24
In a promising sign for theaters, new release Bad Boys: Ride or Die debuted with a better-than-expected $56.5 million. It’s the biggest opening for A-lister Will Smith since, well, Bad Boys For Life back before the pandemic, and a welcome shot in the arm for what has been a very underwhelming summer so far.
In second place, The Garfield Movie grossed $10 million in its third weekend, closing in on $70 million overall. After a month in theaters, IF is on the doorstep of $100 million with a fourth-weekend gross of $7.8 million.
In fourth place, new horror release The Watchers disappointed slightly with $7 million. It’s been overall a down year so far for the usually reliable horror genre, though A Quiet Place: Day One may change all that later this month. Lastly, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes reached $150 million overall in its fifth weekend, grossing $5.4 million.
Theater chains are hopeful that the strong performance of Bad Boys: Ride or Die will be dwarfed next weekend with the arrival of Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2. There has yet to be a $100 million opening weekend in 2024, but fingers are crossed that that’s about to change.
