Box Office Round-Up ~ 6/3/24
The post-Memorial Day box office is usually a relatively weak one, but that’s no consolation to theaters that have already struggled numbers-wise throughout the early summer season. With no new wide releases, The Garfield Movie won its sophomore weekend with $14 million, passing $50 million overall in the U.S. It’s on a pace to pass the Bill Murray-led Garfield from 2004 in a matter of weeks.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga narrowly beat out IF for second place with $10.7 million. It has yet to clear $50 million, but may yet make its money back internationally. IF, bolstered by Garfield’s family-friendly crowd, grossed $10.5 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to $80 million. It’s on track for a U.S. total over $100 million in a rare theatrical over-performance.
In fourth place, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continued its successful first month in theaters with $8.9 million, passed $140 million domestically and closing in on $200 million overseas. It has settled in as the fourth highest grossing movie of 2024, though overtaking bronze medalist Kung Fu Panda 4’s $193 million may be a tall order. Rounding out the top five, The Fall Guy grossed $4.1 million to pass $80 million.
This coming weekend sees the premiere of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the fourth installment in the long-running (and popular) Will Smith/Martin Lawrence buddy-cop action series. The Watchers will be the latest horror entrant to try and lure adult audiences to theaters, while June 14 has Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 for families.
