Box Office Round-Up ~ 5/27/24
It may have won the Memorial Day weekend, but it was a disappointing start for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. George Miller’s long-awaited prequel to Mad Mad: Fury Road, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, came in below expectations with $26.3 million. It may rebound or hold strong going into June, but sadly it looks destined to fall short of its 2015 predecessor.
It’s fitting that Memorial Day weekend means a Monday off of work, since the famously Monday-hating Garfield’s latest cinematic adventure debuted this weekend. The Garfield Movie took second place, just behind Furiosa with $24 million. It’s a little better than expected for the animated comedy, but overall this has been a very underwhelming end to an underwhelming May at the box office.
IF dropped to third place with $16.1 million in its sophomore weekend, clearing $58 million overall domestically. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continued to climb the annual chart, passing Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire to take the #4 spot so far this year. And The Fall Guy wrapped up a month in theaters with $5.9 million.
With no major wide releases inbound for May 31, the Memorial Day movies will hope to find solid legs going into their second weekends. There’s no sugarcoating how tough it’s been for theater chains so far in 2024, as they continue to try and compete with streaming services. While June sees some high profile releases like Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Inside Out 2 and Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1, it’s unclear if any of them will be the big blockbuster theaters are hoping for.
