Box Office Round-Up ~ 5/15/24

For a franchise that’s older than Star Wars, The Fast and the Furious or the MCU, Planet of the Apes showed no signs of slowing down this past weekend as its tenth installment, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes debuted atop the box office with an impressive $58.4 million. It’s the third-best opening weekend in franchise history (behind 2014’s Dawn and the 2001 standalone remake), and a welcome boost for movie theaters heading into the final weekends of May.

Similarly, The Fall Guy had a solid hold in its sophomore weekend, grossing $13.6 million. It’ll have a tough time recouping its weak debut, but solid legs are a sign of good word-of-mouth. In third place, Challengers grossed $4.3 million for a domestic total of $37 million thus far. Tarot took fourth place with $3.4 million to pass $10 million overall.

Bookending a simian-centric weekend at the box office, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire rounded out the top five with $2.6 million. It has grossed $191 million overall domestically, and may yet make the $200 million mark. Either way, it’s now the second-highest grossing movie of the year after Dune: Part Two.
