Box Office Round-Up ~ 2/28/24
The final week of February saw Bob Marley: One Love retain the top spot at the box office, thanks in part to lack of new competition. The biopic passed $70 million overall domestically with a sophomore weekend gross of $13.4 million. Two new releases followed in second and third place. Japanese import Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—To the Hashira Training debuted in the U.S. with $11.5 million. It’s not quite on the level of prior Demon Slayer installments, but still a respectable opening weekend.
In third place, Ordinary Angels opened with $6.1 million. Solid critical reception and good word-of-mouth has bolstered the drama from Kingdom Story Company (who release Jesus Revolution in 2023), putting it on track for $25-30 million overall.
After a couple weeks of cultural shellacking, Madame Web dropped to fourth place in its second weekend with $5.9 million. That said, it has now passed $35 million in the U.S. and $40 million internationally. It’s certainly not the big hit that Sony hoped, but still not a massive disaster compared to bigger-budgeted superhero movies. On the flip side, Migration has now spent ten weeks in the top five, grossing $2.8 million to pass $120 million overall domestically.
March sees the beginning of true blockbuster season, kicking off on March 1st with Dune: Part Two, followed by the likes of Imaginary, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire in the coming weeks.
