Box Office Round-Up ~ 2/21/24
In something of a rebound from the Super Bowl weekend box office, Bob Marley: One Love won its debut weekend in theaters to become the first big success of 2024. The biopic grossed $28.6 over the weekend for a total of $46.5 million starting from its Valentine’s Day opening last Wednesday. On the flip side of the equation, Madame Web is underperforming expectations, though perhaps not quite as badly as the critical response would suggest. (The movie already seems destined for cult status, though maybe not in the way Sony intended.)
The Spider-Man spinoff, led by Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney grossed $15.3 over the weekend for a expanded Valentine’s Day total of $23 million. That may not be enough to make it a long term success, but with a reported budget of just $80 million it’s far from the biggest superhero disaster in recent memory.
Argylle moved to third place in its third weekend in theaters with $4.8 million, while Migration continued to hold strong in the top five after nine weeks with $3.8 million for an overall of $114 million. Rounding out the top five was Fathom’s latest batch of episodes of The Chosen (Episodes 4-6, to be exact), which debuted with $3.6 million. Solid numbers, but well behind Episodes 1-3 last month.
This coming weekend will be highlighted by the theatrical re-release of Tenet from director (and recent Oscar nominee) Christopher Nolan. Its previous theatrical run was at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in late summer 2020 but it has received a strong following since then, and may see a boost in numbers off the box office and awards success of Oppenheimer.
