Box Office Round-Up ~ 2/14/24
You can blame it on the Super Bowl or the bad weather, but there’s no getting around the fact that this past weekend was the worst at the box office in over a year. Due to a lack of solid competition, Argylle won its second weekend in theaters with $6.2 million, though it remains just short of $30 million overall. New release Lisa Frankenstein underperformed expectations, debuting with just $3.6 million. Relatively positive word of mouth may help it in the long run, but it won’t be enough to turn it into a hit.
The rest of the top five were the usual suspects so far this year. The Beekeeper took third place with $3.3 million, while Wonka spent its ninth weekend in the top five grossing $3 million. Finally, Migration continued its similar success, closing out its second month on the big screen with $2.9 million, for $110 million overall domestically.
This coming weekend will be an irregular one, with two major releases (Sony and Marvel’s Madame Web and Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love) debuting midweek on Valentine’s Day. Fathom will also release new episodes of The Chosen in theaters this week, and all three could make waves by the end of the weekend. How big those waves are remains to be seen.
