Box Office Round-Up ~ 2/5/24
February didn’t exactly start off with a bang at the box office. Despite plenty of advance buzz (including a conspiracy theory that roped in Taylor Swift for some reason), Argylle failed to hit big at the box office. The latest action comedy from Matthew Vaughn debuted with $17.4 million. Poor reviews and word-of-mouth will likely hinder the film’s theatrical legs going into February, but it’s the kind of movie that could achieve a strong following when it moves to streaming on Apple TV+.
Second place went to Fathom Events’ latest big screen release of TV series The Chosen, specifically Season 4, Episodes 1-3. Depicting the life of Jesus Christ, these limited releases have been a big success for Fathom, this one debuting with $5.9 million.
The rest of the top five were familiar faces, including two films with surprising staying power. The Beekeeper took third place with $5.2 million in its fourth weekend in theaters, putting it on the doorstep of $50 million overall. In fourth place, Wonka entered its third month at the box office with $4.6 million, passing $200 million overall. One of two holdouts from 2023, Wonka has now outlasted the likes of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Anyone But You and fellow musical Mean Girls to remain in the top five for eight weekends straight.
Similarly, fifth place saw animated comedy Migration gross $4.1 million and pass $100 million overall after seven weekends in the top five. Considering the two films with the most staying power so far in 2024 were both released last December, it’s clear that 2024 has yet to take off in terms of box office. It’s unclear if next weekend’s releases (horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein and the re-release of Disney/Pixar’s Turning Red) will move the needle, so we all need to wait and see how many moviegoers turn out for Valentine’s Day weekend.
