Box Office Round-Up ~ 6/13/23
It was a good weekend at the box office for the Cybertronians, as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts debuted at the top of the charts with $61 million dollars, a substantially better opening weekend than the franchise’s last two releases, 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight and 2018’s Bumblebee. The big opening numbers potentially represent a positive change of fortune for the Transformers franchise, which had seen diminishing returns from sequel to sequel throughout the 2010s.
Missing out on the top spot by just $5 million, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse took second place with a sophomore weekend gross of $55.5 million, dropping only 54% from its big debut. It has now cleared $225 million domestically, with this past weekend’s numbers vaulting it into the top five highest grossing movies of 2023. Similarly, The Little Mermaid also passed the $200 million mark, grossing $23.1 million in its third weekend. Both it and Spider-Man will likely pass Avatar: The Way of Water and enter the #3 and #4 spots on the 2023 list within the next week or two.
In fourth place, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 grossed $7.2 million in its sixth weekend on the big screen. Rounding out the top five, The Boogeyman held strong in its second weekend, dropping just 42% for a weekend total of $7.1 million. Blockbuster season continues this coming weekend with three new releases: horror-comedy The Blackening, Disney and Pixar’s Elemental, and of course Warner Bros. and DC’s The Flash. (Which happens to be a sneaky sequel to the top grossing movie of 1989, Michael Keaton’s Batman.)
