Box Office Round-Up ~ 4/10/23
It’s perhaps fitting that the granddaddy of all video game characters would have the biggest opening weekend ever for a video game movie adaptation. Even with a Wednesday opening, The Super Mario Bros. Movie still managed to gross $146.3 million in its debut weekend, more than double the previous video game record-holder, last year’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It’s already the highest grossing video game movie domestically, and sixth on the all-time worldwide list. It’s only a matter of time before it knocks Warcraft from the top spot worldwide.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the rest of the top five were all jockeying for second place, with John Wick: Chapter 4, new release AIR, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves all within $1 million of each other. Dungeons & Dragons saw the biggest drop, moving from first place to fourth place in its second weekend… tabletop gaming giving way to video gaming at the box office.
In fifth place, Scream VI rounded out the pack with $3.4 million, pulling it past $100 million domestically. With its transition to streaming imminent (no date announced yet, but Paramount Plus likely awaits), it will likely give way to new horror titles The Pope’s Exorcist and horror-comedy Renfield, both hitting theaters on 4/14, followed by Evil Dead Rise on 4/21.
