Box Office Round-Up ~ 4/3/23
Honorable or not, the titular thieves of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves stole the show at the box office this weekend, debuting at $38.5 million for the best non-sequel opening weekend of 2023. The success of the ensemble fantasy adventure bumped both recent superhero sequels—Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania—out of the top five, and managed to knock last week’s winner, John Wick: Chapter 4, out of the top spot in its sophomore weekend.
The Keanu Reeves-led actioner easily cleared $100 million overall with a weekend total of $28.2 million. It will pass $250 million internationally in a matter of days, and even with the drop to second place, it was only down 62% from its debut weekend.
Faith-based drama His Only Son—depicting the biblical story of Abraham—was a surprise success in third place, with a weekend debut $5.3 million. It’s the first title from new distributor Angel Studios, and will likely do solid numbers going into the Passover and Easter holiday weekend.
Heading into its second month in theaters, Scream VI took fourth place with $5.3 million, putting it on the precipice of $100 million overall domestic. Similarly, Creed III grossed $5 million in fifth place, and is a mere $1.5 million away from passing $250 million domestically.
Next week’s new releases include The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination Entertainment (the animation studio behind Despicable Me). Video game movies have had a better-than-average run in recent years (see: Uncharted, Sonic the Hedgehog). Mario, Luigi and co. haven’t been on the big screen since the live-action adaptation bombed in theaters back in 1993. Next week will see if thirty years was long enough to wait for a comeback.
