Box Office Round-Up ~ 2/13/23

Once a year in February, the football season ends and theaters brace for a soft weekend thanks to certain big Sunday game. Super Bowl LVII was no exception, as films across the board saw slightly deflated numbers. Newly arrived sequel Magic Mike’s Last Dance, director Steven Soderbergh’s return to the Channing Tatum-led franchise, took the top spot at the box office with a weekend debut of $8.3 million. Originally intended for streaming on HBO Max, the third Magic Mike represents Warner Bros. Discovery’s new push to reinvigorate its theatrical release slate.

James Cameron unsurprisingly dominated the middle of the top five, with Avatar: The Way of Water taking second place, closing in on $650 million domestic with a weekend gross of $7.2 million. Not to be outdone on the all-time list, Titanic celebrated its 25th anniversary with a theatrical re-release, grossing $6.7 million to take third place.

Tom Brady wasn’t in the Super Bowl, but 80 for Brady made the number-four spot at the box office with $5.8 million in its sophomore weekend. Rounding out the top five was Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, making the most of its nine lives with $5.5 million in its eighth weekend in theaters. Expect the box office to shake things up a bit in the coming weeks with several high profile releases on the horizon, including Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania on 2/17, Cocaine Bear on 2/24 and Creed III on 3/3.
