Box Office Round-up ~ 10/17/22

It may be called Halloween Ends, but if this weekend is anything to go by the Halloween movie season isn’t going anywhere, as horror dominated the box office yet again. The final installment in the rebooted Halloween franchise, Halloween Ends opened to a solid $40 million weekend gross. It’s less than the $49.4 million that Halloween Kills grossed this time in 2021 (both films were released in theaters and streaming on Peacock simultaneously), but certainly not a disappointment considering the rough terrain that has been the box office numbers this year.

In second place, fellow horror release Smile had a fantastic third weekend, dropping just 35% for a total of $12.5 million. It’s on a pace to pass The Black Phone as the highest grossing horror film of the year within the next week or two.

Family-friendly Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile also dropped a mere 35% in its sophomore weekend for a gross of $7.4 million. Its overall numbers are weaker than the horror counter-programming, but overall it’s not a disappointment domestically or internationally (where it still has yet to be released in several markets).

The Woman King took fourth place in its fifth weekend with a respectable $3.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $59.7 million. And in fifth place, Amsterdam continued to woefully underperform with $2.9 million, bringing its domestic total to just $12 million, a harsh number for a high-profile $80 million release.
