Box Office Round-Up ~ 8/1/22

The Super Dog had his day this weekend, as DC League of Super Pets took the top spot at the box office, with a debut gross of $23 million. While the Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart-led animated superhero comedy didn’t quite reach its predicted numbers, it’s still a solid opening… a little lower than Minions: The Rise of Gru but on a par with The Bad Guys as 2022 animated features go. Jordan Peele’s UFO thriller Nope moved down to second place in its sophomore weekend with a total of $18.5 million. It’s a noticeable drop from its debut numbers, but will very likely pass $100 million domestic within the next couple weeks. In third place, Thor: Love and Thunder cleared $300 million domestic with a weekend gross of $13 million. It will very likely surpass Thor: Ragnarok domestically, which took in $315 million back in 2017. Rounding out the top five were the still-strong Minions: Rise of Gru with $10.8 million in fourth place, and of course Top Gun: Maverick in fifth with $8.2 million. Expect Maverick to soar into seventh place on the all-time domestic box office chart by next weekend. It just needs another $9 million to pass the original Jurassic Park and Titanic.
