Box Office Round-Up ~ 7/11/22
As expected, the God of Thunder stormed into theaters this weekend with an opening domestic gross of $143 million. The fourth standalone Thor movie from Marvel Studios, Thor: Love and Thunder didn’t surpass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness or Jurassic World: Dominion for the biggest opening weekend of 2022, but it’s the biggest opening for Thor, beating out 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, also directed by Taika Waititi, the first repeat director for the franchise-within-a-franchise. The returning releases all moved down a space in the top five, as expected. Minions: The Rise of Gru took second place in its second weekend, with an impressive $45.5 million. It’s a little behind the first Minion spinoff’s numbers back in 2015, but has already cleared $200 million domestic overall. Coming up on two months in theaters, and Top Gun: Maverick remains the surprise smash of the year. It grossed $15.5 million in third place, putting it just a few million shy of $600 million domestic. Just behind it in fourth place was Elvis with $11 million. It’s now director Baz Luhrmann’s second film to clear $100 million domestic, joining 2013’s The Great Gatsby. And in fifth place, entering its second month on the big screen, Jurassic World: Dominion took in $8.4 million, for an overall domestic total of $350 million. With three new releases coming next weekend — albeit no major tentpoles — it’s likely that everyone’s favorite Asgardian will reign atop the box office for another week.
