Box Office Round-Up ~ 6/6/22
With no major new releases for the first weekend of June, Top Gun: Maverick was expected to stay locked on to the top spot at the box office. But thanks to strong word-of-mouth from critics and audiences alike, the long-awaited Tom Cruise-led sequel flew even higher than predicted, grossing $86 million in its sophomore weekend for a mere 32% drop from its Memorial Day weekend debut. And while Jurassic World: Dominion may threaten its number-one status next weekend, Top Gun: Maverick is on the fast track to $500 million domestic in a matter of weeks. The rest of the top five were essentially the same faces as last weekend. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness took second place with $9.25 million. The latest chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is closing in on $400 million domestic, though with its Disney+ streaming debut set for June 22, the Sorcerer Supreme’s days in the top five may be numbered. The third, fourth and fifth place movies this weekend played the role of a counter-programming off-ramp on the highway to the Danger Zone. Also in its second weekend, The Bob’s Burgers Movie grossed $4.5 million, while fellow animated comedy The Bad Guys snagged fourth place with $3.34 million. And finally, Downton Abbey: A New Era rounded out the top five with $3 million. With fighter pilots and dinosaurs jockeying for the number one spot next weekend and beyond, there will also be an influx of new counterprogramming in the top five as we move deeper into June. Disney and Pixar’s Lightyear on June 17, and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis at the end of the month. Welcome to summer at the movies. 1.
