Box Office Round-up -- 3/14/22
With no new major releases hitting theatres, it was a relatively quiet weekend at the box office. Though the mainstays of the past few weeks saw a dip in numbers, several still outperformed expectations. Unsurprisingly, The Batman took in $66 million in the top spot, seeing a better-than-average second weekend drop in numbers… a good sign for the Dark Knight himself, and for blockbusters overall as we head into spring and summer.
The big surprise in the top five was the concert film BTS Permission to Dance. The live show—filmed in Seoul—was a one-day special event from Trafalgar Releasing, yet still netted $6.84 million domestically, and over $30 million worldwide. It’s now the highest-grossing event cinema release ever, which shouldn’t come as a shock considering the global popularity of K-Pop megastars BTS.
As usual, the rest of the big earners were the usual suspects… Uncharted and Spider-Man: No Way Home suffered most from the success of The Batman, yet still managed to gross $9.25 million in second place and $4.075 million in fifth place, respectively. Heartwarming comedy Dog settled into fourth place with roughly $5.3 million, assuming the role of de facto counterprogramming to the superheroes and action stars (and K-Pop boy bands) in neighboring theatres.
Expect numbers to be similar next weekend, with no major releases slated until action-comedy The Lost City on March 25, giving Channing Tatum a chance to pull double-duty (a la Tom Holland) in the top five heading into April.
