Box Office Round-up -- 2/22/22
Presidents Day weekend belonged to Tom Holland, at least at the box office. Even as Spider-Man: Far From Home continued to hold strong in third place with $7.2 million, Holland’s latest blockbuster Uncharted had a huge opening weekend in first place with $44.1 million. The action-adventure video game adaptation surpassed predictions for the weekend, cementing the 25-year-old Holland’s status as a bona fide movie star.
In second place, Channing Tatum’s directorial debut Dog was an even bigger surprise. The heartfelt comedy took in $15.1 million, almost triple the numbers predicted for its opening weekend. Spider-Man, sophomore release Death on the Niles ($6.25 million), and Jackass Forever ($5.24 million) rounded out the top five.
Outside the top five, The Cursed was the only new release to underperform relative to predictions. Still, its $1.7 million opening weekend was strong considering the werewolf thriller’s limited marketing. The other nine movies in the top ten out-grossed their projected numbers in theatres this weekend, foreshadowing a stronger-than-expected start to the 2022 blockbuster season.
