Box Office Round-Up -- 2/14/22
It should be no surprise that the big winner at the box office this weekend was football, since all releases saw a big drop in numbers yesterday, in keeping with the traditional Super Bowl Sunday slump in theatergoing. Nonetheless, new release Death on the Nile, Kenneth Branagh’s COVID-delayed sequel to 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express won the weekend with $12.8 million.
In second place, Jackass Forever took in a little over $8 million in its second weekend in theatres, making it a bona fide hit thanks to its low budget of just $10 million. The weekend’s other new release, Marry Me, had a rougher opening with a underperforming gross of $8 million in third place. There may be more than meets the eye to the Jennifer Lopez romcom’s performance, as it premiered simultaneously on Peacock, NBC Universal’s streaming service. Plenty of viewers may have opted to pair romance with football this weekend from the comfort of their own homes.
Rounding out the top five, our old friend(ly neighborhood) Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed $7.15 million in fourth place, while Liam Neeson actioner Blacklight failed to shine with just $3.6 million in fifth. Outside the top five, Licorice Pizza jumped back up to eighth place with $922,501, perhaps enjoying a bump thanks to its recent Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay.
