Box Office Round-Up -- 1/24/22
Despite all the screaming and singing, it was a quiet weekend at the box office, allowing Spider-Man: No Way Home to swing its back to the top spot for a sixth weekend with a gross of $14.1 million. If he keeps up this pace, Spidey will surpass Avatar as the 3rd highest-grossing domestic release of all time in a matter of weeks.
Last week’s winner Scream dropped a relatively expected 59% for a gross of $12.4 million in its second weekend. The latest sequel (or reboot… or requel, if you will) in the R-rated slasher series has already eclipsed the entire domestic haul of 2011’s Scream 4, proving there may be some life in the three-decades-old franchise yet.
Universal’s animated jukebox musical Sing 2 netted $5.7 million in its fifth weekend. Its cast of celebrity-voiced critters, led by Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, and Bono, surpassed Encanto as the highest grossing animated movie of the past year. That said, Encanto has a hit single in the Billboard Hot 100 with “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” so it’s been a big weekend for animated musicals all around.
Fourth in the top five was the weekend’s new release, Universal’s Redeeming Love. The faith-based romance, set during the California Gold Rush, outperformed expectations with $3.7 million. A very different period drama took fifth place, as The King’s Man netted $1.8 million.
Outside the top five, Gravitas Ventures’ belated release The King’s Daughter (no relation to The King’s Man) finally emerged in theaters. The mermaid fantasy-drama starring Pierce Brosnan and Kaya Scodelario wrapped production almost eight years ago. It was originally slated for release by Paramount in 2015, but ended up sitting on a shelf until Gravitas acquired the distribution rights. It failed to make a splash with a meager $750,000 at the box office.
