Box Office Round-Up ~ 2/5/25

While the Wolf Man didn’t move the needle with moviegoers earlier this month, Dog Man seems to be a different story. The DreamWorks Animation comedy debuted with a surprisingly strong $36 million, the best opening weekend of the year so far. It likely benefited from strong word-of-mouth and the lack of other family-friendly programming on the big screen (besides Disney’s late 2024 offerings that are still hanging on).

In second place, sci-fi thriller Companion took in an opening weekend of $9.3 million, while (speaking of Disney) Mufasa: The Lion King neared $230 million overall in the U.S. with a seventh-weekend gross of $6.3 million. One of Them Days passed $30 million overall in its third weekend, grossing $5.8 million, while Flight Risk dropped from first to fifth for a sophomore weekend total of $5.4 million.

This coming weekend sees a pair of somewhat ironic Valentine’s Day offerings: slasher movie Heart Eyes and actioner Love Hurts, starring Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose. Valentine’s Day weekend itself (which also happens to be President’s Day Weekend) brings out the big guns with Paddington in Peru and the latest from the MCU, Captain America: Brave New World.
