Box Office Round-Up ~ 5/23/24

In an increasing rarity in this modern movie world, an original film not based on IP topped the box office, as writer/director John Krasinki family fantasy film IF debuted with a solid $33.7 million. It will face some competition from The Garfield Movie over Memorial Day weekend, but that’s a very promising start that puts it on a pace for $100 million domestically.

In second place, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes grossed $25.4 million to pass $100 million overall in just two weekends in theaters. It’s now on the doorstep of becoming one of the top five highest grossing movies of 2024. In third place, horror reboot The Strangers: Chapter 1 debuted with a better-than-expected $11.8 million.

The Fall Guy passed $60 million overall with a third-weekend gross of $8.3 million, while Challengers rounded out the top five with $2.8 million, completing its first month in theaters with $43 million overall. The upcoming long weekend sees the aforementioned The Garfield Movie as well as George Miller’s highly anticipated Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
