Box Office Round-Up ~ 4/4/24
It was a clash of the Titans this past weekend at the box office as the latest installment in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire debuted with an impressive $80 million. Since its predecessor, 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, went directly to streaming on what was then HBO Max mid-pandemic, it’s hard to compare the two films from a box office standpoint, but it’s hard to argue that we’ll be seeing more the big lizard and the big gorilla in the near future.
The success of the New Empire came at the expense of the Frozen Empire, as Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire dropped 65% to second place with $15.5 million. It has grossed over $70 million in the U.S., putting it behind Ghostbusters: Afterlife and 2016’s Ghostbusters in their respective second weekends.
Dune: Part Two cleared $250 million overall in its fifth weekend, taking third place with $11.3 million. In fourth place, Kung Fu Panda 4 passed $150 million domestically, finishing its first month in theaters with $10.3 million. Finally, horror title Immaculate took fifth place with $3.2 million, though it may see some competition in the “scary nun” department with the arrival of The First Omen this weekend.
Additionally, this weekend sees the debut of Dev Patel’s highly anticipated actioner Monkey Man. That said, Godzilla and Kong will likely reign supreme in theaters for another weekend or two, depending in the success of Alex Garland’s Civil War on April 12 and Abigail and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare on April 19.
