Box Office Round-Up ~ 10/17/23

Just as the concert itself dominated the summer, the concert documentary Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour dominated the box office in its debut weekend, albeit slightly below predicted numbers. Wide release concert documentaries aren’t terribly common, so there aren’t a lot of examples to measure The Eras Tour against. (One of them, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, doesn’t hit theaters until December.) It did however come close to unseating Joker for the biggest October debut ever.

In second place, The Exorcist: Believer took in $10.9 million, but has yet to pass $50 million overall. Neither has PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, which took third place with $6.8 million, putting it on the doorstep of $50 million within the week. Also in their third week in theaters, Saw X moved to fourth place with $5.6 million, while The Creator grossed $4.3 million. All four of these movies, especially the two horror titles, will likely have to make room for Five Nights at Freddy’s weekend after next.

This coming weekend sees the release of Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon, which looks to be one of the celebrated directors biggest releases of all time. Whether or not it unseats Taylor Swift remains to be seen, but it’s a big success for the period crime drama, which has already been garnering awards buzz for months.
