Box Office Round-Up ~ 6/5/23
As expected, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse won the box office in its debut weekend. But what was unexpected was just how big a win it was. Sony’s animated sequel debuted at $120.6 million, far higher than predicted. It’s more than triple the opening weekend of predecessor Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse back in 2018, it’s the third best opening weekend for a Spider-Man feature—both live-action and animated—and to top it all off, it’s the second best opening weekend of 2023 behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
It’s worth mentioning that animated features now represent 30% of the top ten highest-grossing movies of the year, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie at the top, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in ninth place, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in tenth place (and climbing).
Last week’s top grosser, Disney’s The Little Mermaid, moved to second place with a solid $41.3 million. It should easily pass $200 million overall in the U.S. within the next couple weeks. In third place, horror newcomer The Boogeyman debuted at $12.3 million, also above its predicted numbers. It should carry the horror torch through June, with its only potential competition coming in the form of horror-comedy The Blackening on June 16th.
Rounding out the top five with two of spring’s remaining heavy hitters, as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Fast X grossed $10.6 million and $9.5 million respectively. Next week’s biggest release is Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which hopes to reignite the blockbuster franchise after the (relatively) disappointing performance of 2018’s Bumblebee.
