Box Office Round-Up ~ 11/7/22

With mere days remaining before Black Panther (likely) reclaims the throne, Black Adam took the top spot at the box office for a third weekend in a row with $18.2 million. Its overall domestic total of $137 million is hardly a disappointment, but it’s not the smash hit that Warner Bros. and DC were likely hoping for, especially with Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s release looming this coming weekend. (The original Black Panther grossed over $200 million in its opening weekend, going on to become the highest grossing domestic release of 2018.)
Another surprise anime success took second place this weekend, with Crunchyroll’s U.S. release of One Piece Film: Red grossing $9.3 million. Multiple anime titles from Japan have seen big weekends in American theaters over the past couple years, which has undoubtedly been a pleasant surprise for distributors like Crunchyroll.
Ticket to Paradise held strong in third place with $8.5 million, a mere drop of 14% from last weekend. It will likely continue into the holidays as the go-to rom-com counter programming. Finishing out the top five were the remnants of the Halloween season, with Smile and Prey for the Devil practically tied with $3.9 million and $3.8 million respectively. Smile in particular has been the big winner of the fall season, grossing just over $200 million worldwide on a $17 million budget.
