Box Office Round-Up ~ 10/31/22
In spite of—or maybe because of—it being Halloween weekend, it was an overall just average showing at the box office across the board. Black Adam to continued to reign supreme at the top of the charts with $27.4 million in its sophomore weekend, putting it at $111 million overall in its first ten days. Unsurprisingly, it’s the best box office performance since Thor: Love and Thunder back in early July, and may only be surpassed by Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in a couple weeks.
Ticket to Paradise took the number-two spot once again this weekend with roughly $9.8 million, once again offering an alternative to superheroes and horror shows. Coupled with a strong international showing, the George Clooney/Julie Roberts rom-com is on a pace for an overall $150 million gross.
Horror titles filled out the rest of the top five, with new release Prey for the Devil taking third place with a weak $7 million debut. It may do similar numbers in the coming week as the newest fright-fest on the block, but it’s unlikely to perform well past that. On the flip side, in fourth place, Smile continued to over-perform with $5.4 million in its fifth weekend. It has now grossed $92.4 million domestically, so an overall total past $100 million is all but guaranteed at this point.
And despite it being its namesake weekend, diminishing returns have struck again for the Halloween franchise, as Halloween Ends grossed just $4 million in its third weekend in theaters. It has done well overall compared to its budget, but it will likely end up with overall numbers lower than Halloween Kills last year, which in turn was far below Halloween back in 2018.
