Box Office Round-Up ~ 9/22/25
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Infinity Castle retained the top spot at the box office in what was admittedly a very low-key weekend at theaters. Last weekend’s anime record-setter brought in $17.3 million, which was enough to put it ahead of the one new release in the top five. Football horror flick Him - from producer Jordan Peele - debuted in second place with $13.2 million. It’s a decent number for a mid-budget thriller, but Demon Slayer clearly has taken box office by surprise.
Him may have also suffered from a crowded field of horror and thriller titles at the box office. The Conjuring: Last Rites took third place with $12.2 million (putting it at $150 million total), while The Long Walk took fifth with $6.2 million. Sandwiched in between them was Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, which cleared $31 million overall with a third-weekend gross of $6.4 million.
The final weekend of September sees a trio of new very different new releases. The Strangers: Chapter Two represents another horror release in an already crowded field heading into the Halloween season, while Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie brings the hit animated series from Netflix/DreamWorks Animation to the big screen. The biggest new arrival will be Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which Warner Bros. hopes will be another in a string of big hits this year, as well as the opening splash of Hollywood’s awards season.
