Box Office Round-Up ~ 10/24/22

After several months of relative quiet at the box office, blockbusters roared back to life this weekend, for the first overall gross over $100 million since the middle of July. The latest entry in the DC Extended Universe led the pack, as Black Adam grossed a total of $67 million in its debut weekend. It’s the best opening weekend for the often-beleaguered DCEU since Aquaman back in 2019, and one of the best openings of Dwayne Johnson’s career.
In second place, Ticket to Paradise isn’t doing DC superhero numbers, but it had a fantastic opening weekend by rom-com standards, perhaps a testament to the enduring star power of George Clooney and Julia Roberts. Easily topping Marry Me’s opening gross of $8 million (the highest of the year, and of the pandemic era for that matter), Ticket took in $16.5 million over the weekend, putting on track for $70 million overall when all is said and done.
Thanks to the new releases, horror took a backseat this weekend. Smile dropped to third place with $8.4 million in its fourth weekend, putting it at $84 million overall domestically. And right behind that was Halloween Ends, which fell hard to fourth place with an 80% drop for $8 million total. That said, its worldwide grossed has cleared $80 million and its main competition remains itself, albeit streaming on Peacock.
Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile rounded out the top five with $4.2 million. It remains the go-to counter programming for kids and families, but its overall gross has been a disappointment at just $28.7 million over three weeks. It’ll be competing with even more horror next weekend, with exorcism thriller Prey for the Devil hitting theaters. Two potential awards contenders, Till and TÁR also expand to wide release for the final weekend of October.
