Box Office Round-Up ~ 5/8/24
Despite positive reviews and word of mouth, The Fall Guy landed on its face at the box office this weekend, starting off the month of May with an underwhelming $27.7 million debut. It came in ahead of predicted numbers, but still very low for a big-budget blockbuster. The hope remains that it may have a decent hold going into the summer season, but it’s still a bad omen for the rest of 2024 at the box office.
Normally, a Star Wars movie debuting in second place with just $8.7 million would be cause for alarm, but considering this was the 25th anniversary re-release of Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, it’s actually a welcome success. Not that it really makes a difference for the highest grossing movie of 1999, but this past weekend’s numbers put it past $480 million domestically.
Challengers dropped to third place in its second weekend with $7.5 million, putting it on the cusp of $30 million overall. In fourth place, new horror release Tarot debuted with $6.5 million, while Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire rounded out the field with $4.5 million, for a six-weekend total of $188 million.
Speaking of apes on the big screen, this coming Mother’s Day weekend sees the release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the fourth reboot chapter and tenth overall film in the six-decade franchise. The following weekend offers a trio of new releases (Black to Black, IF and The Strangers: Chapter 1) before the arrival of The Garfield Movie and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in time for Memorial Day.
