Box Office Round Up - 12-3-18
All good things must come to an end. After a record holiday run at the box office last week, things came crashing down nationwide as the calendar turned to December. Without any major movie premiering, most audiences stayed away from theaters entirely. Every movie in the top nine saw at least a 40% drop in numbers, while The Possession of Hannah Grace with Shay Mitchell debuted at a meager seventh. Probably should have possessed someone who'd be a box office draw.
All told, the top five shaped out exactly as it did last week. We did have a swap, as The Grinch actually moved back into second while Creed II slipped to third. That means that the top two spots are held by animated films for the first time since June 2012, when Pixar's Brave and Dreamworks' Madagascar held court. The Grinch has now inched past $200 million nationwide, still $60 million shy of the objectively superior 2000 version starring Jim Carrey. Nevertheless, it's another strong performance from Universal and Illumination.
Fantastic Beasts remains at four while, amazingly, Bohemian Rhapsody is still holding on in the top five after over a month at the box office. It has soared past $500 million worldwide, breaking the record for a musical biopic previously held by 2015's Straight Outta Compton. It's a truly impressive run following a well-publicized turbulent production. Overall, things should hopefully return to normal next week, with the anticipated historical drama Mary Queen of Scots starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie hitting theaters. We can't wait!
