Box Office Round-Up ~ 10/10/22

Smile had plenty to, um, grin about as it won its second weekend at the box office, dropping only 22% for a weekend total of $17.6 million. It’s yet another surprise horror success in a year full of them (X, Barbarian, Scream, etc.), and with Halloween Ends on the horizon next week, expect that trend to continue all the way to October 31st and beyond. Perhaps acting as Smile’s counter-programming, family-friendly musical Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile took second place with $11.5 million. It’s a disappointing number for the $50 million release, but it’s also the only family film to hit theaters since July and will likely be the only game in town until the holiday season arrives in November. The true disappointment of the weekend was Amsterdam, from writer/director David O. Russell. Even with an all-star ensemble cast, the period crime comedy grossed a paltry $6.5 million in its opening weekend. It also failed to garner much acclaim from critics or audiences, making the would-be awards contender more or less dead on arrival. Rounding out the top five were The Woman King with $5.4 million, clearing $50 million overall in its fourth weekend on the big screen, and Don’t Worry, Darling with $3.48 million. Overall it’s another low turnout weekend at the box office, as studios struggle to find titles that will draw crowds away from the many options on TV and streaming. How this will affect the bigger tentpole releases later in October and November remains to be seen.
