Box Office Round-Up ~ 9/15/25

It was a landmark weekend for anime at the U.S. box office as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Infinity Castle debuted atop the box office charts with a massive $70.6 million, more than double the previous record-holder, Pokemon: The First Movie, which took in $31 million in 1999. Demon Slayer has seen immense popularity, originally as a manga series, then as an anime TV show before moving to feature films, so this may not be the end of the franchise’s box office dominance.

A wide array of new releases made for a solid weekend for theaters all around. The Conjuring: Last Rites dropped to second place with $25.6 million, putting it at $130 million overall domestically. In third place, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, the third — and based on the title, final — feature film based on the popular PBS/ITV series, grossed $18.1 million in its debut, putting it ahead of Downton Abbey: A New Era’s $16 million opening in 2022.

The Long Walk, the latest Stephen King adaption and the latest dystopian survival thriller from Hunger Games and I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence, took fourth place with $11.7 million, bolstered positive critical and audience reception. Rounding out the top five was another nostalgic re-release, with Toy Story celebrating its 30th anniversary by adding another $3.4 million to its $372 million worldwide box office.

Further solidifying the success of the re-release trend, The Sound of Music also made the top ten this weekend with $1.6 million. This coming weekend sees another eclectic group of new releases, led by Jordan Peele-produced horror flick Him and the Colin Farrell/Margot Robbie romance A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.
