Box Office Round-Up ~ 10/5/25

The release of any new Taylor Swift album has become something of a cultural event, so it should come as no surprise that The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, the theatrically released tie-in documentary, beat all challengers —new and returning—at the box office, with an opening weekend gross of $33 million. It’s not quite on the level of The Eras Tour concert movie two years ago, but easily one of the biggest openings for a documentary in recent memory.

The rest of the top five were somewhat underwhelming, with One Battle After Another falling to second place with a sophomore weekend gross of $11.1 million. Another awards hopeful, The Smashing Machine, debuted in third place with a disappointing $6 million despite Dwayne Johnson on the marquee. It’s a muted start to awards season, though obviously some of the heavier hitters have yet to premiere (see: Wicked: For Good, Avatar: Fire and Ash, etc.).

Two returning movies took fourth and fifth place, with Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie and The Conjuring: Last Rites grossed a respective $5.2 million and $4 million. This coming weekend features a trio of big releases jockeying for awards, big box office awards or both: Jennifer Lopez-led musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, crime caper Roofman starring Channing Tatum, and Disney’s latest attempt to jumpstart the Tron franchise, Tron: Ares.
