Box Office Round-Up ~ 5/26/26

When there’s a new Star Wars in theaters, it’s safe to assume it’ll debut atop the box office, and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu opened to a three-day weekend gross of $81 million and $102 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend. It’s the first Star Wars feature to hit theaters since 2019, and is something of a canary in the coal mine for the future of standalone Star Wars movies.

It’s the second-weakest opening for the Disney-era of the franchise, behind Solo: A Star Wars Story’s $80 million in 2018, though obviously box office performances and the franchise itself have changed considerably over the past eight years. Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy, is scheduled to hit theaters in May 2027… how The Mandalorian and Grogu performs over the coming weeks may determine whether or not that release date holds.

In its second weekend, Obsession actually improved on its opening weekend numbers, grossing $23.9 million to move up to second place. Michael took third place, continuing its successful box office run with $20.7 million, passing $300 million total in the U.S. It’s now just $16 million away from becoming the second-highest grossing movie of the year The Devil Wears Prada 2 and The Sheep Detectives took fourth and fifth place with a respective $12.7 million and $8.9 million. The latter movie has passed $40 million total domestically, while the former is just a few million shy of the $200 million mark.

The final weekend of May will see the release of Backrooms, based on the online meme and more directly the successful YouTube horror series from Kane Parsons (who also directed the feature film). Other new releases include D-Day drama Pressure, starring Brendan Fraser, The Breadwinner from comedian Nate Bargatze, and the limited release of Power Ballad, starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas.
