Box Office Round-Up ~ 5/19/26

Michael regained the top spot at the box office this past weekend, cementing its status as the spring’s biggest hit with a fourth-weekend gross of $26.1 million. It’s now within reach of $300 million in the U.S. and another $35 million after that to pass Project Hail Mary as the second-highest grossing movie of the year. The Devil Wears Prada 2 moved to second place with $17.8 million for a domestic total of $175 million so far.

New horror thriller Obsession, from writer/director Curry Barker, debuted in third place with a solid $17.1 million thanks to positive critical and audience reactions. Mortal Kombat II and The Sheep Detectives moved into fourth and fifth place with $13.4 million and $9.5 million respectively. Mortal Kombat II is only a few million away from becoming the highest grossing movie in the franchise (passing the 1995 Mortal Kombat’s $70 million), but having not yet reached $100 million, it’s unlikely that the movie is doing the numbers that Warner Bros. hoped.

This coming Memorial Day weekend is highlighted by Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu. It’s been almost seven years since the last Star Wars movie in theaters (2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker), marking the longest theatrical gap for Star Wars since before Disney acquired the franchise. It remains to be seen if the popularity of the Disney+ series can translate to the big screen, as Disney looks to jumpstart its biggest franchises on a theatrical level (see also: Marvel).
